Goals To help pre-service teachers comprehend the basic concepts of language assessment and testing; to equip them with the skills to write appropriate test items for measuring the four language skills and language components; and to provide theoretical and practical competence in assessing young learners, alternative assessment practices, and 21st-century assessment tools.
Course Content Basic concepts of measurement and evaluation; characteristics of a good test (validity, reliability, washback); writing objective item formats such as multiple-choice, true-false, matching, and fill-in-the-blanks; assessing receptive and productive language skills; performance-based testing and rubric development; assessing vocabulary and grammar; principles of testing young learners; alternative assessment practices such as portfolios and self-assessment; digital and 21st-century testing applications. Extensive in-class practice on writing and analyzing test items.

1 Explains the basic concepts of the language assessment process and the fundamental characteristics of a "good test" (validity, reliability, authenticity)
2 Designs and writes appropriate objective test items (multiple-choice, matching, etc.) for different language skills (reading, listening) and components (vocabulary, grammar)
3 Develops performance-based tasks and objective rubrics to assess productive skills such as speaking and writing
4 Prepares assessment tools suitable for the cognitive and affective characteristics of the age group in the context of teaching English to young learners
5 Integrates alternative assessment practices (portfolios) and 21st-century digital assessment tools into the educational process in addition to traditional exams
