Goals | The establishment of the Republic of Turkey as a secular and unitary state after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire; history of Turkish modernization experience in accordance with the establishment of the new state, the instruction of the Turkish Revolution pioneered by Kemal Atatürk and the Kemalist thought, as the meaning and statement of modernity and secularism in Turkey to young generations and let them figure out its significance. It aims to let the student who attends the courses acquire the ability of classification, description, explanation, knowledge of the current social and individual problems in Turkey by taking science and norms of modernity into account with respect to the Kemalist thought and the Turkish Revolution. |
Course Content | Atatürk's Principles and History of Turkish Revolution Revolution aims to introduce the following subjects/concepts: The meaning of concepts such as revolution, reform, political reforms and constitutional monarchy; the similarities and differences between the concepts, the historical examples of these concepts and the analysis of the examples according to the contents of the concepts. In the context of recognizing the historical bases of the Turkish Revolution; the crisis of the Ottoman Empire, the internal and external dynamics that affected this crisis, the analysis of the dynamics and their effects on the Turkish Revolution. Efforts to modernize the Ottoman Empire in order to preserve its existence; political reforms, reforms and constitutional processes within the scope of these efforts; the subconscious structure of the modernization process and Ottomanism, Islamism, Turkism and Westernism in this context; effects of these intellectual movements on the Turkish Revolution and today. The dissolution process of the Ottoman Empire; political, social, economic and cultural dynamics that were effective in this process; The Tripoli War, the Balkan Wars, the First World War and the Mondros Armistice in the process of dissolution. "The Eastern Question" in the Ottoman period and during the transition to the Republic; the emergence of this subject; the politics of the states in the scope of this issue, the implications of these policies on the Ottoman Empire and "The Eastern Question" during the transition period to Republic / in the first years of the Republic. Developments after the signing of the Mondros Armistice; Anatolian occupations, reactions to occupations and the first organizations in the National Struggle; Redd-i İlhak (denial of annexation) and national sentiments shaped around this concept; the effects of these occupations on the emergence of the National Struggle and the Kuva-yı Millîye (national forces), the spirit of the National Struggle; Mustafa Kemal and his leadership in the process; the state of the country and the reaction of Mustafa Kemal Pasha against the occupations; Mustafa Kemal's quest for a political solution to occupations and political / intellectual activities in Istanbul; Mustafa Kemal Pasha's disembarking at Samsun. The first step for the National Struggle is organizing through congresses: Amasya, Erzurum and Sivas congresses. The emergence of the Misak-I Milli (national pact) text, the elements that make up this text, the legal status of the text. The place of the text of the national pact in the establishment of the Republic of Turkey and its place and importance in the internal and external politics of the Republic of Turkey today. The structure of Grand National Assembly and Sevr Peace Treaty. National War of Independence, The Eastern and Southern Fronts in the War, The Treaty of Gümrü and The Treaty of Ankara. Western Front; Inönü Battle, The Battle of İnönü II, Kütahya and Eskişehir Wars, Sakarya Battle. Great Offensive and its results. The Armistice of Mudros and The Treaty of Lausan. |
Learning Outcomes |
- Understands the necessity of studying the Atatürk Principles and Revolution History Course, knows the concepts of Revolution, Reform, Tanzimat, Constitutional Monarchy, Coup and Republic, distinguishes the similarities and differences of these concepts with each other, knows the examples in history related to these concepts and analyzes the elements that reveal the concepts through these examples. - Acting on the expression “The Period of Decline of the Ottoman Empire”, she questions the formation of historical knowledge and realizes the necessity of developing a critical perspective towards the knowledge obtained in any branch of science other than historical knowledge. - He/she knows the “crisis” period regarding the Ottoman Empire, the internal and external dynamics of this period and evaluates the impact of this period on the Turkish Revolution in the context of the information he/she has obtained. - - Knows the Ottoman Modernization process, historical events and situations that emerged during this period, and evaluates the impact of this process on the Turkish Revolution in the context of the information he obtained. - Knows the Eastern Question and the historical events that took place within the framework of the process in question. - Understands the interactions of historical events within the framework of the concept of “Eastern Question” and evaluates how the context in question can shape the future. - Within the framework of the concept of “Eastern Question”, they gain an idea about how the dynamics from the past affect the present and become aware of the connection between the present and the past. - Understands the spirit of national struggle and how this spirit is formed, - Understands the importance of feelings such as national unity and solidarity, love of country and humanity for the continuity of the Republic of Turkey. - Knows the ways to access information in the in-class activities carried out within the framework of the course in question, conducts resource research, uses databases and other information sources, questions the information he/she has reached, evaluates the information he/she has reached and expresses his/her evaluations in the in-class activities carried out within the context of the subjects, acts democratically in the activities carried out within the framework of the discussion method, understands the importance of respecting different ideas, adopts democratic behavior, adopts the principle of respecting human rights, evaluates differences not as separating factors but as parts that form the whole. |
