| Goals | The aim of this course is to teach students the importance and functions, fundamental principles, techniques, and application of afforestation studies in practices. |
| Course Content | Introduction, the history and role of afforestation, scopes and problems, economic, environmental, social, and policy issues in afforestation , Seed resources (seed stands and seed orchards), seed transfer and seed transfer zones for common tree species (Pinus brutia, Pinus nigra, Pinus sylvestris, Cedrus libani, Picea orientalis, Fagus orientalis), seed and cone collection, handling and storage, pretreatments, Species and provenance trials, Goal of the plantation, site assessment, choice of species and provenances, rotation age…, Site preparation (technical aspects of site preparation, environmental consideration in site preparation, land clearing, soil preparation…) , Afforestation by seed (main quid lines in direct seeding, sowing requirements, sowing methods, direct sowing in some tree species…) , Afforestation by planting (main quidlines in planting, planting stock, size of plants, planting time, spacing, planting methods), Examination an old and a new afforestation site, preparing the technical report, Afforestation studies in Turkey, Fast growing tree species and industrial plantations (hybrid poplars, Ecucalyptus, maritime pine, Turkish red pine, ash, …), Cultural treatments after plantation establishment (protection, replace, weed control, cultivation, irrigation, fertilization …), Plantation on disturbed lands (mine, coal mine, etc.), plantation for special purposes , Preparing an afforestation project |
