[] About Program

Department of Foreign Languages Teaching started to train ELT students at undergraduate level education in the academic year of 2015-2016 registering 40 students. In the unit, the medium of instruction is English. One year of preparatory class is required for those who cannot get a passing grade in the proficiency examination held at the beginning of each academic year. The students who pass the English proficiency test are exempted from the preparatory class and start the freshman classes. The faculty of the department comprises of one associate professor, four assistant professors and one research assistant.

Our department aims to train teacher candidates who have the following competencies:

* to comprehend any speech variety either in live or broadcast coverage,
* to read and understand almost all text types such as field-related articles and literary works with ease from hypothetical, structural/textural and grammatical dimensions,
* to participate all dialogues or deates,
* to comphrehend and use idioms and colloquial expressions,
* to express him/herself fluently,
* to state the nuances in meaning conclusively and accurately,
* to revise his/her expresions when he/she experiences a difficulty in conveying an idea,
* to present explicit and smooth description or opposed views by means of a reasonable contextual framework which helps the listener to differentiate important points,
* to write the abstracts of professional or literary works and critiques with a contextually-appropriate and fluent style,
* to educate teacher trainees who are capable of dealing with the difficulties in their future careers.

[] Objectives

The aim of ELT program is to educate qualified English language teachers for primary and secondary schools in our country. Students are provided not only with field knowledge but also with theoretical and practical knowledge regarding various aspects of foreign language teaching. Students at the end of their bachelor education have the opportunity to start teaching as apprentices at schools affiliated with the Ministry of National Education so that they can consolidate their knowledge and feel more confident of their teaching skills.

The Candidate should pass the Entrance Exam of Higher Education Council Student Selection and Placement Center.

[] Course's Contrubution To Program
A student is required to successfully complete the designated program of courses meet a minimum of 240 ECTS credit requirement and have a minimum GPA of 2.00/4.00.
Program graduates who have successfully completed all the requirements fulfilled "Bachelor's Diploma in English Language Teaching" will receive the degree.
[] Recognition of Prior Learning
The rules and regulations for recognition of formal prior learning are well defined. Transfer can be made among the institutions of which equivalency is recognized by Higher Education Council. Also successful vocational school graduates to continue their education to obtain Bachelor’s degrees if they are successful in the selection and the placement examination (DGS, i.e. vertical transfer examination) are admitted. The courses to be taken by these students are determined by the relevant department, on the basis of courses they have completed in the programs from which they have graduated. The students of the University of Düzce, some courses may be exempt under certain regulations. Course content from another institution, if the course content is appropriate with Düzce University, and relevant faculty / institute / college approved by the director, students may be exempted from this course.
[] Description of Program

The students who pass the English proficiency test are exempted from the preparatory class and start the freshman classes. As of the 2019-2020 academic year,the faculty of the department comprises of one associate professor, four assistant professors and one research assistant.
This programme intends to include all kinds of practical and theoretical aspects of the field of study and it aims to improve the language proficiency of students to equip students with the contemporary methods and techniques of language teaching and increase their awareness in intercultural differences to the extent that they become teachers of English who are innovative and knowledgeable professionals and who will be able to be practicing teachers not only in Turkey but also elsewhere in the world.

1 He/she speaks English very well and is knowledgable about the concepts related to English language teaching and its pedagogy.
2 He/she adapts the language teaching programs, strategies, approaches and techniques to his/her own teaching conditions. He/she also makes use of his/her existent knowledge of language testing and evaluation.
3 He/she chooses the best teaching strategies, approaches and techniques, considering the individual and developmental differences of students and the subject area.
4 He/she develops appropriate teaching materials, taking the students' needs into consideration.
5 He/she collaborates with other English teachers, participates in various organizations and conferences and follows the recent literature on language teaching.
6 Is aware of the theoretical foundations (philosophical, sociological, psychological, historical, legal, economic, etc.) on which education is based and reflects these theories in their practices.
7 Is aware of the attitude, responsibility, and ethical values related to the teaching profession and behaves accordingly.
8 Plans, implements, and evaluates the learning-teaching process effectively, considering the curricula' basic concepts, principles, and characteristics.
9 Designs and manages an effective and supportive learning environment based on learning and teaching theory, approach, strategy, methods, and instructional technologies in creating the learning-teaching process.
10 Follows the innovation, development, and 21st-century skills in the teaching profession and reflects these developments and skills to research and practice based on scientific principles.
11 Uses Turkish properly and effectively per the rules and communicates well with students.
12 Adheres to Atatürk's Principles and Revolutions and exhibits attitudes and behaviors toward democracy, human rights, and Turkish national, moral, and cultural values.
13 Knows at least one foreign language at a level to monitor and communicate with colleagues
14 Is aware of the importance of willing and active participation in cultural, social, environmental, artistic and sportive activities for the teaching profession, to be an effective global citizen.
15 Acts sensitively to local and global events and developments and participates in projects and activities to support society's development, with a sense of social responsibility.

[] Professional Profile of Graduates
The graduates of Department of English Language Teaching can teach English at the schools of the Ministry of National Education both at the elementary and secondary level. They also have the chance to teach at university prep schools as instructors as well as at private institutions.
[] The Upper Stage of a Transition
The graduates of Department of English Language Teaching can obtain a master’s degree and then can pursue a PhD degree.
[] Program Structure
English Language Teaching Undergraduate Program consists of 62 courses and 240 ECTS credits totally. Each academic term elective courses are provided comprising %25 of the curriculum. Elective courses are offered by the Department with the code of IDO.
[] Examinations, Assessment and Grading

Assessment for each course is subject to its respective instructor's choice. On the other hand, the instructors essentially follow principles specified by Duzce University's Associate (Vocational Training)- Undergraduate Education Examination Guide (D. Ü.
