Goals The objective of this course is to examine economic situations in which the assumptions underlying competitive market efficiency lose their validity. Building on the foundations laid in Advanced Microeconomic Analysis I, this course will examine strategic interaction (game theory), information asymmetries (adverse selection and moral hazard), and the design of institutions to achieve desired economic outcomes (mechanism design). The course demonstrates how deviations from the competitive model (market power, private information, and strategic behavior) lead to inefficiency and how economic theory can guide the design of contracts, auctions, and other mechanisms to mitigate these problems.
Course Content The course content consists of social choice, game theory, information asymmetry, and mechanism design.
Learning Outcomes
# Öğrenme Kazanımı
1 Explain Arrow's Impossibility Theorem and describe how different informational assumptions (cardinal utility, interpersonal comparability) affect social choice possibilities.
2 Solve for Nash equilibria in strategic form games and apply backward induction to find subgame perfect equilibria in extensive form games.
3 Analyze how adverse selection leads to market failure and compare signaling and screening as alternative institutional responses.
4 Apply principal-agent theory to derive optimal contracts under moral hazard, explaining the trade-off between incentives and risk-sharing.
5 Derive optimal bidding strategies in standard auction formats and explain the logic of the Revenue Equivalence Theorem.
6 Evaluate the efficiency and incentive properties of alternative mechanism designs using the revelation principle.
7 Design incentive-compatible mechanisms and screening contracts for specific allocation problems with private information.
