Goals The objective of this course is to establish a solid foundation in individuals' economic decision-making processes and competitive market theory. Students will learn to derive behavioral predictions from fundamental assumptions about preferences and technology by studying the axiomatic approach to consumer and producer theory. The course will focus on dual methods, which are fundamental analytical tools of comparative statics. By the end of the course, students will understand the conditions under which competitive markets achieve efficient outcomes and will be able to identify the criteria used in Advanced Microeconomic Analysis II to evaluate market failures and strategic behavior.
Course Content The course content consists of preferences and utility theory, the consumer's problem, indirect utility and the expenditure function, choice under uncertainty, firm theory, and general equilibrium analysis.
Learning Outcomes
# Öğrenme Kazanımı
1 Explain the relationship between preference axioms and the properties of utility functions, and interpret the economic meaning of duality results such as Roy's Identity and Shephard's Lemma.
2 Derive Marshallian and Hicksian demand functions using utility maximization, expenditure minimization, and duality methods.
3 Apply the Slutsky equation to decompose price effects into substitution and income effects, and solve cost minimization and profit maximization problems for firms.
4 Analyze the conditions under which observed demand behavior is consistent with utility maximization, using revealed preference and integrability theory.
5 Evaluate market allocations for Pareto efficiency and assess the assumptions underlying the First and Second Welfare Theorems.
6 Construct proofs of key theorems in consumer and producer theory, and formulate economic models for novel choice problems.
