Goals The aim of this course is to examine the structure of the human body, heart and soul in Sufi thought using a holistic approach; to investigate the effects of Sufi practices (zikr, riyazet, tefekkür, etc.) on the physiological and psychological structure of human beings; and to enable students to evaluate Sufism's approach to human nature from a scientific and interdisciplinary perspective.
Course Content This course examines the structure of the human being in Sufi thought within the framework of the concepts of body, nafs (self), heart, and soul. It explores the spiritual development of the human being in Sufi literature, including the stages of the nafs, purification of the heart, and the maturation of the soul. The course also evaluates the psychological and physiological effects of Sufi practices such as dhikr (remembrance), ascetic discipline (riyazat), contemplation, and spiritual observation (muraqaba). In addition, the impact of Sufism on human well-being, spiritual balance, and inner development is discussed in light of classical Sufi sources and contemporary scientific perspectives.
