Goals The aim of this course is to provide students with knowledge about the internal and external factors that led to the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, reform movements in the 19th century, intellectual movements in the late Ottoman period, the political and military situation at the beginning of the 20th century, World War I, the occupation of Anatolia, Mustafa Kemal Pasha’s arrival in Samsun and the beginning of the National Struggle, the congress period, the establishment of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, the fronts of the War of Independence, the Mudanya Armistice and the Lausanne Peace Treaty, and the historical developments that led to the establishment of the Republic of Turkey.
Course Content This course examines the political, social, and economic developments during the late period of the Ottoman Empire. The course content includes the internal and external factors that led to the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, reform movements in the 19th century, and the intellectual movements that emerged during the final period of the Empire. In addition, the political and military situation of the Ottoman Empire at the beginning of the 20th century, the effects of World War I, and the occupation of Anatolia are discussed. The course also covers the beginning of the National Struggle with Mustafa Kemal Pasha’s arrival in Samsun, the congress period, the adoption of the National Pact (Misak-ı Milli), the establishment of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, and the military developments of the Turkish War of Independence. Furthermore, diplomatic developments such as the Mudanya Armistice and the Treaty of Lausanne are examined in order to understand the historical process leading to the establishment of the Republic of Turkey.
