Goals The aim of this course is to enable students to comprehend the fundamental characteristics of Tanzimat period literature (particularly the First Phase between 1860 and 1876), which emerged alongside the modernization process in 19th century Ottoman society. Within the scope of the course, students are expected to understand the new literary genres developed during this period—such as newspapers, theater, novels, and essays—as well as the intellectual world of pioneering authors like Şinasi, Ziya Paşa, and Namık Kemal. Furthermore, the course seeks to foster students' comprehension of the relationship between literature, society, politics, and ideology. Through thematic, formal, and linguistic analyses of original texts from the era, students will also develop critical reading, comparative evaluation, and text interpretation skills.
Course Content This course covers the beginning of the Westernization period in Turkish literature and the works of the first-period Tanzimat authors. It examines the innovations in poetry, theater, novels, and journalism by pioneers such as Şinasi, Ziya Paşa, and Namık Kemal. The course aims to introduce the shift in mindset from classical to modern literature and the concept of "art for society" in broad terms.
