Goals The main objective of this course is to give students relevant insight regarding lumber manufacturing. Teaching of lumber production with the maximum yield and minimum loss. Giving information on the lumber manufacturing methods, standardization and new approaches developed for sawmilling industry.
Course Content Introduction to lumber manufacture, Development of Lumber Industry in Turkey and in the World, principal sawmill types ,Log supply, harvesting and transporting of timber, location, topography and surfacing of log yard, functions of the log yard, yard size, layout and equipment, scaling and tallying of logs, Log bunks, Log decks, debarking of log, debarker types, Storage technics of log, log ponds, wheeled transport and loaders, other vehicle (Wheel bucket loaders, dump trucks, flatbeds and picups) in the log,Principles of sawmill building design , Principles and systems for primary log breakdown, Sawmill Machinery, framesaw or sash gang, frame sawing, Bandsaw headrigs, Circle-saw headrigs, chipper headrigs, resaws, edgers,single and multiple-saw trimmers,Log sorting systems, Types of cranes, portal cranes, log and lumber transport types, Lumber Grading, Grade Marking and Lumber Storage,Saw design and maintenance, maintaining equipments, Standardization of log and lumber, Sawn timber – terminilogy, general terms, definitions, defects, appearance grading of hardwoods and softwoods, qualitative classification, standards related to log and lumber,Lumber manufacturing technology, log breakdown technics, general sawing rules, lumber yield,Productivity in lumber manufacturing and factors effective on the productivity. Quality yield, determining of green and dried lumber dimension, formulas used in determining the most appropriate log small end diameter and lumber dimensions in live cutting and cant cutting techniques,Saw-tooth nomenclature, saw sizes, sawing theory in frame saw, band saw and circular saw,Maximum yield theory, two-dimensional geometric theory for maximizing lumber yield from logs,Surface roughness in lumber, computers in lumber manufacturing
