| Goals | This course aims to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to the scope and principles of semiotics. Semiotics is a discipline that examines the processes of signs and sign actions, as well as meaning-making, through elements such as images, sounds, gestures, body language, and objects. The goal of the course is to ensure that students gain a deep understanding of the theoretical framework and principles of semiotics and develop the ability to approach multiple forms of communication from a semiotic perspective. In this context, students will be introduced to the fundamental concepts of semiotics, the relationships between signs and communication, and the applicability of semiotic techniques. Students will acquire the competence to apply semiotic concepts within their own fields of study. |
| Course Content | This course aims to enhance students’ competencies in communication and cultural analysis by providing an in-depth exploration of the fundamental concepts of semiotics and its function within communication studies. The course emphasizes Ferdinand de Saussure’s theory of the sign, highlighting the role of linguistic structures in the production of meaning, and situates these structures within a broader framework through Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic theory. The study of codes and meaning-making processes develops students’ abilities to decode codes and interpret meanings across diverse communication environments. Semiotic applications demonstrate their functions in media and architecture, while structuralist theories provide the theoretical foundations for these processes. Semiotic readings of texts and cinema strengthen students’ analytical thinking skills. Media-text analyses enable a deeper examination of contemporary forms of communication, such as advertising, news, and fashion. By the end of the course, students will have engaged with contemporary semiotic approaches and discussed their significance in communication studies, equipping them with comprehensive knowledge of modern analytical methods. |
