| Goals | To enable prospective teachers to develop an awareness of fostering a love of reading and a reading culture in children, and to develop their ability to effectively utilize qualified works written for and suited to children in educational processes. |
| Course Content | The development of children’s literature in the world and in Turkey. The importance of introducing children to quality children’s books during childhood, and the role of children’s literature in fostering thoughtful and sensitive individuals with a strong reading culture. Examination, through examples, of the essential features (design, content, and educational aspects) that children’s literary works should possess. Presentation of examples of poor-quality children’s books and discussion of their negative effects on children’s developmental characteristics. Activities aimed at helping prospective teachers evaluate the suitability of the books they read and analyze for different age groups and determine which aspects of children’s development these books support. Identification of the contributions of various literary genres (epic, fairy tale, poem, story, novel, etc.) and linguistic materials (counting rhymes, tongue twisters, riddles, etc.) that appeal to children to their overall development. |
