Goals The aim of the course is to provide teacher candidates who understand the basic concepts, approaches, theories and techniques about teaching reading and writing, and perform reading and writing practices according to the characteristics of the first grade students.
Course Content Relation between the definition process of reading-writing learning areas and learning areas, properties of Turkish, effects of these properties on early reading and writing, objectives and principles of teaching early reading and writing, basic features of first grade teachers and students, reasons for failure in teaching early reading and writing, tools and equepments used in teaching early reading and writing, methods used for teaching early reading and writing, early reading and writing teaching method indicated in Turkish curriculum, practices of teaching early reading and writing.

1 Uses the basic concepts related to early reading and writing.
2 Explains the effect of sound, writing and language chacarestics of Turkish to teaching early reading and writing.
3 Extablishes a relationship between learning areas and teaching early reading and writing.
4 Explains the aims and the principles of teaching early reading and writing.
5 Evaluates the causes of diffuculties and failures that can be encountered in teaching early reading and writing based on the first grade students' developmental characteristics.
6 Evaluates the strenghts and weakness of the methods used in teaching early reading and writing with their superiority and limitations.
7 Explains the principles, characteristics, implementation process and stages of teaching reading and writing stated in Turkish curriculum.
8 Explains the role of teaching early reading and writing on developing students' high thinking skills.
9 Selects or designs appropriate tools and equepments for teaching early reading and writing.
10 Plans and applies the teaching-learning process in accordance with the steps of teaching early reading and writing method stated in Turkish curriculum.
11 Develops activities to improve the process and skills (sound, letter, syllable, word recognition, fluent reading, comprehension, etc.) of teaching early reading and writing.
12 Uses appropriate methods and techniques to evaluate the students' reading and writing skills.
