Goals The aim of this course is to analyze the effects of cinema on ideological, cultural and social structures using critical theory approaches. Students will learn to critically evaluate movies in terms of power, representation, identity, class, gender and race. In addition, it is aimed to develop an in-depth understanding of how movies make social inequalities visible or conceal them. The course provides students with critical thinking skills and enables them to question cinema as a field of cultural production.
Course Content This course aims to examine the effects of critical theory on cinema and the role of cinema in the reproduction of social structures. Critical approaches such as the Frankfurt School, postmodernism, feminist theory and postcolonialism are used to criticize cinema. The course discusses how to analyze films in terms of ideology, power, identity and representation. Students gain the ability to question social inequality and ideological manipulations by evaluating films from a critical perspective.
