Goals This course aims to examine the relationship between social memory, space, and cinema from an interdisciplinary perspective. Students will critically engage with concepts such as collective memory, historical representation, identity formation, trauma, and cultural memory, while analyzing them through cinematic examples. The goal is to enable doctoral students to develop a profound understanding of the aesthetic, ideological, and cultural functions of social memory and space in cinema, and to conduct original research.
Course Content The course will cover theories of social memory, the relationship between space and memory, cinematic representations of historical events, and the depiction of collective trauma and memory spaces (monuments, cities, cultural sites). It will also address memory in documentary cinema, the role of space in constructing national identity, and the ideological dimensions of memory in film. Students will be expected to conduct film analyses, engage with scholarly readings, and develop research projects related to the course themes.
