Goals The aim of this course is to develop students' conceptual analysis and analytical thinking skills by reading the foundational and classic texts of the history of logic directly from primary sources. Through the examination of texts that passed from the Aristotelian tradition to the Islamic world and were authored by thinkers such as al-Farabi, Ibn Sina, al-Ghazali, al-Abhari, and al-Katibi, students are expected to master the classical logic terminology and methods of reasoning.
Course Content This course focuses on textual analysis of fundamental works in classical logic literature. Selected excerpts are read from texts such as Porphyrios' Isagoge, Aristotle's Categories and Interpretation (or their counterparts in al-Farabi), the logic section of Ibn Sina's al-Isharat, al-Ghazali's Mi'yar al-Ilm, and the essential textbooks of the madrasa tradition: al-Abhari's Isagoge and al-Katibi's al-Shamsiyya. Concepts, propositions, syllogisms, and demonstrations are discussed directly using the original language and terminology of these sources.
