Goals To provide the competence to analytically and critically evaluate the fundamental problems of existence (ontology) as posited by Ancient Greek philosophers, as well as the Peripatetic (Meşşâî) and Illuminationist (İşraki) schools.
Course Content The subject matter of the philosophy of being; ontology in Ancient Greece; Aristotelian metaphysics and ontology; ontological approaches in Islamic thought; Al-Farabi’s ontology; the problem of the attributes of being in Al-Farabi; modalities of being in Al-Farabi; midterm exam; Avicenna’s (Ibn Sina) ontology; the attributes of being in Avicenna; modalities of being in Avicenna; Suhrawardi’s ontology; the problem of the attributes of being in Suhrawardi; modalities of being in Suhrawardi.
Learning Outcomes

1 Analyze the continuity and transformation of ontological problems from Ancient Greece to Islamic Peripatetic thought.
2 Examine the hierarchy of being and the theory of emanation in the systems of Al-Farabi and Avicenna.
3 Evaluate the ontological distinction between essence and existence in post-Avicennan philosophy.
4 Compare the fundamental ontological principles of the Peripatetic (existence-based) and Illuminationist (light-based) schools.
5 Deconstruct the modalities of being (necessity, possibility, impossibility) and their philosophical implications.
