Goals | This course aims to examine the discourses produced in cinema and media with a theoretical and critical approach. Students learn the methods of discourse analysis to analyze the ideological, political and cultural discourses constructed through media and cinema and apply these methods to different media content. The course also provides a comprehensive theoretical background to understand and criticize the social effects of visual and textual representations. |
Course Content | This course comprehensively examines how ideological, social and cultural discourses produced through media and cinema are constructed and analyzed. The course examines the basic concepts and approaches of discourse theory, especially focusing on the ideas of thinkers such as Michel Foucault, Louis Althusser and Antonio Gramsci. It discusses how concepts such as ideology, hegemony and power relations are represented in media and cinema content. |
Learning Outcomes |
- By grasping the basic theoretical framework and methods of discourse analysis, they will be able to evaluate media and cinema contents from a critical perspective. - They will have the competence to analyze the social, political and cultural dimensions of cinema and media discourses. - Will be able to criticize issues such as gender, race, class and environmental discourses in the context of media and cinema. - They will develop skills to apply discourse analysis in their academic research or professional media work. |
