Goals To introduce microbiology and its subdisciplines to nursing students and to provide basic knowledge and skills for diagnosis, treatment and prevention of infectious microorganisms (bacteria, parasites, viruses, fungi).
Course Content Introduction to microbiology and its history, tools, equipment and devices used in microbiology, bacterial dyes and staining methods, Bacterial structure and physiology, bacterial genetics and antimicrobial substances Environments in which microorganisms are produced, sampling techniques, Introduction to immunology and the structure of the immune system, Antigens, Immunoglobulins (antibodies, Immune Response, Vaccines and Immune Serums, Gram positive cocci Staphylococci, Gram positive cocci Streptococci, Enterobacteriaceae, Non fermentatives, Mycobacteria and gram positive rods, Sterilization and disinfection, microbiological diagnostic methods, Medical parasitology introduction to helminths and general characteristics of nematodes, nematodes, General characteristics of cestodes, General characteristics of protozoa and protozoa in medical parasitology, Blood and tissue protozoa
Learning Outcomes - Explain the the basic concepts related to microbiology.
- Get knowledge about the materials and techniques used in microbiology laboratory.
- Get knowledge about the microbiological sampling methods and the matters to be taken into consideration in transport.
- Get knowledge about the structures, metabolism and genetic properties of bacteria.
- Acquire general information about immunology and to know the properties of antigens and antibodies
- Get knowledge about the routes of bacterial transmission and protection
- Get knowledge about sterilization and disinfection methods, their mechanism of action
