Goals | The establishment of the Republic of Turkey as a secular and unitary state after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire; history of Turkish modernization experience in accordance with the establishment of the new state, the instruction of the Turkish Revolution pioneered by Kemal Atatürk and the Kemalist thought, as the meaning and statement of modernity and secularism in Turkey to young generations and let them figure out its significance. It aims to let the student who attends the courses acquire the ability of classification, description, explanation, knowledge of the current social and individual problems in Turkey by taking science and norms of modernity into account with respect to the Kemalist thought and the Turkish Revolution |
Course Content | Parallel to the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, the assessment of the Turkish society as within the level of civilized nation-states, the experience of Turkish revolution with its sui-generis character in definition of the nation-state in a chronological line beginning from the Ottoman Turkish Imperial state: The Classical and post classical ages, late 18th and 19th centuries, the Second Constitutional Era, The First World War, The Turkish National Struggle of 1918-1922 and the interval of 1923-60; the assessment of the modern Turkish nation-state by the restructuring of the state & the nation and the stages of the change and transformation in Turkish political and social system The analysis of the political, social, economic and cultural transformation with respect to the internal and external political developments and their actors. The evaluation of the historical stages of the establishment of the modern Turkish state as a reference of solution and comparison for current debates in Turkish society and politics. The understanding of historical dynamism of change in Turkish politics and society. |
Learning Outcomes |
- Recognizing the importance of introduction of Atatürk's Principles and History of Revolution, to know the concepts of revolution, reforms, political reforms, Constitutional Monarchy, coup d’état and Republic; distinguishing the similarities and differences of the related concepts, to know the historical examples of these concepts and analyzing the elements that reveal the concepts from the examples. - Inquiring the formation of historical knowledge, Becoming aware of the necessity of developing a critical point of view against the knowledge obtained in any scientific discipline besides the historical knowledge by acting through the phrase "Ottoman State Decline Period". - To know the "crisis" period in relation to the Ottoman Empire, the internal and external dynamics of this period, and evaluating the effects of this period on the Turkish Revolution through the obtained knowledge. - To know the Ottoman Modernization process, historical events and situations that emerged during this period; evaluating the effects of this process on the Turkish Revolution in the context of the information obtained. - To know the Eastern Question and historical events that take place in the context of the Eastern Question. - Understanding the interactions of historical events with each other within the framework of the Eastern Question concept, evaluating how the context could shape the future. - Having an idea of how the dynamics from the past affect the present in the context of the Eastern Question concept and becoming aware of the link between the present and the past. - Understanding the spirit of national struggle and how this spirit is formed. - Recognizing the importance of sentiments such as national unity and solidarity, love for homeland and humanity for the continuity of the Republic of Turkey. - To know the ways of accessing information in classroom activities in the context of the lecture; conducting a resource search; using databases and other sources of information; inquiring on information reached; evaluating the information received and evaluating the information received in classroom activities in the context of the subject; behaving democratically in the activities conducted within the framework of the discussion method; understanding the importance of being respectful to different ideas; adopting democratic behavior; respecting human rights as a principle; treating the differences as parts that make up the whole, not the parser. |
