Goals | The objective of the course is to teach students the basic concepts of political science and major political systems. |
Course Content | Meeting, Introduction: The subject, method and emergence of political science and contemporary developments in political science Effects of political life: Infra-structural factors (natural factors, demographic factors and economic factors) and super-structural factors (institutional factors, cultural factors) State from the perspective of political science (I): State concept, origin of state and its origin problem, State from the perspective of political science (II): The state’s identity problem, principal government bodies and their forces Basic concept of political science: Political power (I) (The determination of political power, political power and independence, legitimacy basis of political power) Political systems (I): Pluralistic systems (theory of democracy, political democracy, social democracy) Political systems (II): Monist systems (theory of dictatorship, Marxist regimes, fascist regimes) Midterm examination Political systems (III): systems of underdeveloped countries (reasons and characteristics of underdevelopment, underdeveloped democracies, single party regimes, military dictatorships) Political forces (I): Political parties (the structure of parties, party systems, party functions) Political forces (II): Pressure (interest) groups (the general frame of pressure groups, power groups organized for non-political purposes, elites (elitist theories, the elites in underdeveloped countries) Public opinion: What is public opinion? The formation of public opinion, political systems and public opinion, the influence of public opinion on political decisions Political participation: The function, method and level of participation, factors leading to the participation Sociology of election: Factors playing role in voting, reasons impairing the equality of electing and being elected, Overall assessment of course |
