Düzce University, Institute of Graduate Education, Department of Archaeology Master's Program started education and student intake in 2024. The language of education of the program is Turkish. The program accepts students from ALES equal weight score type. The department has a total of 6 faculty members, one Professor, three Associate Professors, two Dr. Lecturer. There are a total of 6 faculty members, including one Professor, three Associate Professors and two Assistant Professors. Four laboratories within the Department of Archaeology are also open to the use of graduate program students.

The aim of the program is to educate researcher, open to development, productive and creative individuals who scientifically evaluate how civilizations have developed and the stages they have gone through until today, who believe that social development can be possible by protecting historical environment and cultural values, who can use the knowledge they have acquired to create and develop awareness of cultural heritage protection in society, who can apply new scientific and technological methods that are developing rapidly in archaeology.

[] Admission Requirements

A 4-year undergraduate degree in Archaeology, Classical Archaeology, Protohistory and Pre-Asiatic Archaeology, Prehistory, Art History, History, Cultural Heritage Conservation and Repair, Museology, Anthropology, Philosophy, Zoology and Botany Departments of Biology, Industrial Engineering Departments of Engineering Faculties, Architecture Faculties, Ceramics and Sculpture Departments of Fine Arts Faculties. To have at least 55 points from ALES equal weight score type. Students are admitted to the master's program through an interview. The number of students to be admitted to graduate programs and the qualifications to be sought in candidate students are announced before the beginning of each semester. In this announcement, the application conditions and deadline, the place and date where the candidates will be interviewed are specified. Candidates must have a bachelor's degree and must have at least 55 standard points in the relevant score type from ALES, which is conducted centrally by the Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM). The equivalence of undergraduate diplomas obtained abroad must be approved by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK). Candidates; Until the deadline specified in the announcement, they fill in their ALES documents, undergraduate diplomas, approved documents indicating the success grades they have received from the courses they have studied at the undergraduate level, their graduation grade point averages, other registration-related information and apply to the institute directorate with the candidate number they provide in the internet registration environment. The registration procedures of the candidates are organized and carried out by the relevant institute directorate. Candidates are taken to the interview exam by the candidate evaluation jury. The interview grade is given out of 100 full marks. A candidate's scientific achievement level grade is the sum of 50% of the ALES score, 25% of the undergraduate grade point average and 25% of the interview grade. The interview grade must be at least 50 and the scientific achievement level grade must be at least 60.

[] Course's Contrubution To Program

The master's program with thesis consists of at least seven courses, a seminar course and thesis study, provided that it is not less than twenty-one credits in total. Seminar course and thesis study are non-credit and are evaluated as successful or unsuccessful. A master's program with thesis consists of a total of at least 120 ECTS credits, including at least eight courses including a seminar course and thesis study, provided that an education period is not less than 60 ECTS credits. Students must meet the above-mentioned requirements in order to be considered successful in the program. 

[] Recognition of Prior Learning

Students studying at Düzce University may be exempt from certain courses within the framework of certain regulations. If the course content taken at another institution is compatible with the course content given at Düzce University, there is a right of exemption for these courses, provided that it is approved by the relevant faculty/institute/school board of directors.

The Archaeology Master's Program aims to train researcher individuals who have a conscious, analytical and critical perspective, who are sensitive to social problems, who have developed correct working and thinking habits, who observe ethical values, who examine and solve the problems they face both in social and professional life, and to equip them with the knowledge, skills and competencies that will enable them to work in the public and private sectors.

Those who successfully complete their master's degree and receive the title of “Expert Archaeologist” can work as academicians in universities, but also have the opportunity to work as expert archaeologists in state-owned or private museums, in the relevant units of the Ministry of Culture and local municipalities.

Students who graduate from this program can apply to study in doctoral programs.

[] Program Structure

The Archeology Master's program has a program structure in which courses with 21 national and 120 ECTS credits will be transferred to students within the framework of formal education. In order to complete the program, it is necessary to prepare a Master's Thesis.

[] Examinations, Assessment and Grading

Students have to take midterm exams in the first year to complete 21 credits of courses. Student attendance is monitored by the instructor. In addition to the midterm exam, a final exam is held for each course. The date and place of the final exams are announced in the department. Success grade is calculated by taking 40% of the midterm exam grade and 60% of the final exam grade. Some faculty members also take into account some other criteria (e.g. class attendance, seminar presentation, written homework, etc.) when calculating the final exam grade. Students who successfully complete their first year courses continue their thesis studies in the following years.

The thesis master's program consists of a total of at least 120 ECTS credits, including at least seven courses, one seminar course and thesis work, with a total of not less than twenty-one credits. In order for graduate students to graduate, they must have at least one full-text paper or article related to their thesis topic that has been produced nationally or internationally and published or accepted for publication.
