[] About Program

The Philosophy Department is active in education by receiving students since academic year of 2017-2018. The department, which has 4 sub-departments (Systematic Philosophy and Logic, History of Philosophy, History of Science, History of Turkish-Islamic Thinking) teaches the discipline of philosophy in both systematic and historical perspectives. By providing skills of philosophical investigation, the department aims to develop solutions to the social, cultural, environmental, moral, political and technological problems of humanity. In order to achieve this goal, the department teaches philosophy in a systematic and historical way. In one hand, the students learn the theories and perspectives of philosophers and on the other hand they engage directly with the philosophical problems in a systematic way.

Philosophy as a discipline examines the foundations of science, morality, art, religion and technology, so it is expected from it to develop perspectives and alternative solutions to the problems which may occure in these different fields that concerns all the parts of the society. In order to meet this expectation the undergradute program of philosophy aims to raise individuals who will have high capability of analysis and synthesis,  advanced writing and oral skills, who will think in a logical and critical manner, who will be successful in human relations and who will be sensitive to the problems of mankind

[] Admission Requirements
The admission of students to the programmes is made according to the Student Selection and Placement Centre (OSYM – University entrance exam) within the framework set by the regulations of Higher Education Council (HEC). After students inform the Student Selection and Placement Centre about what programmes they want to study at, students are placed in the related programmes according to their scores they got from the exam.

Foreign students are admitted to the related programmes with the scores of internationally acceptable exams such as SAT, ACT or are admitted to the related programmes with their high school graduation grades (Undergraduate and Graduate Programmes for Foreign Students Admission Guidelines).

The admission of students of General Academic Exchange Protocol to the related programmes are done within the framework of the bilateral agreements (ERASMUS, FARABI, etc) signed between Duzce University and the partner universities. Guest students may enrol into the courses in this programme, if the related academic unit approves. Sufficient language knowledge is required to monitor the programme

[] Course's Contrubution To Program
To complete the available courses in the program (a total of 240 ECTS) successfully, the students have to get at least 50 points out of 100 and required to achieve 2.50 on a 4.00 weighted grade point average. To graduate from the programs students should get at least DD in all of the courses provided. Students are also required to complete the compulsory practice in the specified time.
[] Recognition of Prior Learning
Students enrolled in DU might be exempted from certain courses within the framework of certain regulations. A student can be exempted from a certain course provided related course content previously received from another institution complies with that of DU, which is subject to approval and verification by the Board of faculty/graduate school/school.

Recognition of Education Abroad

DU recognises academic terms and courses studied by a student that has been involved in an exchange programme for one or two terms at the universities with which a partnership was established.

Students that are selected to avail themselves of Student Mobility for Studies under ERASMUS are obliged to draw up an education agreement with relevant ERASMUS Unit Coordination prior to the mobility term. The education agreement demonstrates the courses to be studied at the partner university the student intends to go, as well as appropriate ECTS credits.

In addition to this, students shall be asked to issue a Recognition Sheet, which refers to the equivalent of foreign courses in DU, so that the credit transfer is planned and approved.

At the end of the exchange term, the courses studied abroad are recorded and demonstrated in the transcript, together with the original course codes and names and ECTS credits. Pursuant to ERASMUS Programme and Collaboration Agreements concluded thereunto, official transcripts will quote, an abbreviation signal of ET, European Transfer, for the courses studied abroad.)

The department of philosophy aims to promote philosophical knowledge and to educate individiuals who are capable of philosophical reasoning, who are sensitive to their environment and society, who respect human rights, justice and law. Students who graduate from the department will learn themselves, the world and the society in which they live more realistic. Hence, they will realize themselves easier. The students who possess deeper, critical and versatile reasoning will create more sensible solutions the world problems they face. Philosophy with its creative and alternative thinking will also give the graduates basic advantages in their business.

9 Acquire, analyze and compare the main theories of value in philosophy
10 Acquire to be able to understand and evaluate the philosophical problems by using philosophical concepts and theories on the basis of the knowledge of history of philosophy
11 To become responsive individuals towards the humane, social, cultural, ethical and political problems of current period and to search solutions for these problems from a philosophical perspective.
12 To be able to develop the methods of criticize, evaluation, analyze and interpretation, which provide to be able to read and write a text, in order to understand and solve the philosophical problems.
13 Acquire a conscious of history and ethics, and also conservation of human rights with the philosophical view on human.
14 To become an individual, who is critical and inquisitorial and also evaluative, by acquiring philosophical view on values.

[] Professional Profile of Graduates

The graduates of department of philosophy, begin the academic career after commencing master and doctorate degrees. On the other hand, after getting the pedagogical formation, they are assigned as philosophy teacher at the Ministry of Education or as counsellor at private schools and private teaching institution. In addition, the graduate students can find a job at media organs, at departments of education and culture in public establishments, at departments of public relations, planning and advertising in private sectors and as an author, advisor and life coach. On the other hand, they can work as free researchers in the disciplines of social science. 
[] The Upper Stage of a Transition
Graduate students of this programme may apply to study in graduate programmes.
[] Program Structure
*  Philosophy undergraduate programme was schemed to be a programme where undergraduates  have to take 118 mandatory and 34 elective credits, so in total 152 credits and 240 ECTS credits. The students must take at least 30 ETCS per semester.

* The programme has common courses designated by University Senate along with the compulsory common courses and English course partaking in Higher Education Law.

* Students are not required to participate in any summer practice to be graduated.

Students must take 118 mandatory credits and 34 elective credits for a total of 152 credits / hours in order to graduate from the Department of Philosophy. Students must take 30 ECTS credits each semester. In order to graduate students have to take at least 240 ETCS credits.
