Psychology is the study of human behaviour and mental processes. The main aim of psychologists is to understand the underlying mechanisms of behaviour and mental processes from different perspectives such as social, cognitive and developmental. For this purpose, psychologists conduct research on many different topics such as behavioural disorders, psychopathologies, human resources, interpersonal relations, behaviour in groups, human development. They also work in the field as practitioners.
The fields of psychology are very diverse. According to the American Psychological Association, the largest organisation of psychologists in the world, there are 56 fields of psychology representing a wide range of specialisations, from clinical psychology to behavioural neuroscience, from sports psychology to cross-cultural psychology. Thus, psychologists have a wide range of jobs in which they can work both independently and in teams with people from different fields to contribute to society. Most graduates find employment in a variety of fields such as administrative support, public relations, education, commerce, sales, service sector, health, biological sciences and computer programming. The fact that it has comprehensive working areas to minimise the problem of unemployment leads psychology to be a department that is highly demanded by students.
