Goals This course aims to examine the social, cultural, and ideological dimensions of representational politics in cinema. Students will explore the representation of gender, class, ethnicity, identity, migration, trauma, and cultural difference within the framework of visual culture theories, and critically evaluate the aesthetic and political dimensions of representation in film.
Course Content The course covers theories of representation, visual culture studies, cinema and identity/alterity, feminist film theory, postcolonial perspectives, queer cinema, ethnic representations, migration and diaspora cinema, and the visual representation of social traumas. Students are expected to engage in theoretical readings, conduct film analyses, actively participate in academic discussions, and develop original research projects.
