The Department has been started to the education in 1994-1995 academic year with 36 students under University of Abant Izzet Baysal at Düzce. The first graduates with 29 students had been given in 1997-1998 academic year . After August 1999 Adapazari and November 1999 Düzce earthquakes, firstly the Faculty Building was moved to Uzunmustafa Primary School and then moved to Faculty of Forestry located in Konuralp Campus in May 2002. Currently, It continues to education in building of tecnical education faculty built in the campus in August 2003. The aim of the Department of Furniture and Decoration is to educated designers and educators for furniture industry, design offices and educational institutions. The students educated to this department is firstly started to learn the basic information relative to the field of furniture and interior design and gained to the theoretical knowledge and the practice of application about furniture and decoration during 4 years. They obtain to the ability of producing to their designed product themself end of the four years and are completed to the last academic years with a application project. The department educates to designers and educators who is talented, creative and equipped with the technical knowledge in the field of furniture and interior design. Students are supposed to gain the experience of a creative culture and production method from workings of workshops and design studios. The graduated students can work as a teacher in Technical Vocational High Schools, together with designer and engineers in furniture industry and set up themself up in business.Also the department makes to furniture productiıon and sale.

The mission of the Department of Furniture and Decoration Education is to provide high quality educational opportunities necessary to adequately prepare students for professional and scientific careers in wood products and wood science.

The vision of the Department of Furniture and Decoration Education is to be a leading institution, providing an education and conducting research at the international level within the fields of wood products and wood science and related areas, and serving the society with Science and Technology in line with the national needs.

Students who successfully complete the programme will be awarded an Master’s Degree in Furniture and Decoration Education.
[] Earned Level of Qualification
It is a programme that provides graduate education at Second Cycle level.
[] Admission Requirements
It is essential for the candidates of graduate program:

•    To hold an undergraduate diploma.
•    To have a grade of at least 55 in ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam), 450 in GMAT, which is an internationally accredited exam or 610 in the “quantitative” part of GRE exam.
•    To meet the requirements determined by the head of department and to have  taken the language proficiency exam given by the Institute, unless the candidate has a certificate of KPDS/UDS or any other exam accredited by YOK (Turkish Higher Education Institution).
•    To be successful in the interview/ aptitude test.
•    To have a reference letter, a statement of purpose  showing thereas on for applying  for the graduate program and competence in written and oral Turkish and/or foreign language skills.
•    Exchange student applications are to be done in accordance with the admission requirements of the agreement signed between DuzceUniversity and the partner university.
•    Visiting students can take the courses approved by the head of the related department.
[] Course's Contrubution To Program
Students studying master's with thesis are required:
• To take 7 courses and enroll in the Seminar course and Master’s thesis, and complete 120 ECTS. To get at least a grade of CB in order to be successful in each course of the program,
• To have 3.00 general average grade out of 4.00 on the core subjects, and are to be successful in the Seminar course and Master’s thesis defense.

Students registered in a Master’s program without thesis:
• Are required to take 10 courses and enroll in the Graduation Project Course, and complete 120 ECTS. (The Graduation Project Course do not have local credit and are assessed with a pass or fail).
• Are required to get at least CB grade in order to be successful in a course in their program.
• Are required to have 3.00 general average grades out of 4.00 on the core subjects, and are to be successful in the Graduate Project course.
[] Recognition of Prior Learning
Students enrolled in DU might be exempted from certain courses within the framework of certain regulations. A student can be exempted from a certain course provided related course content previously received from another institution complies with that of DU, which is subject to approval and verification by the Board of faculty/graduate school/school.

Recognition of Education Abroad

DU recognises academic terms and courses studied by a student that has been involved in an exchange programme for one or two terms at the universities with which a partnership was established.

Students that are selected to avail themselves of Student Mobility for Studies under ERASMUS are obliged to draw up an education agreement with relevant ERASMUS Unit Coordination prior to the mobility term. The education agreement demonstrates the courses to be studied at the partner university the student intends to go, as well as appropriate ECTS credits.

In addition to this, students shall be asked to issue a Recognition Sheet, which refers to the equivalent of foreign courses in DU, so that the credit transfer is planned and approved.

At the end of the exchange term, the courses studied abroad are recorded and demonstrated in the transcript, together with the original course codes and names and ECTS credits. Pursuant to ERASMUS Programme and Collaboration Agreements concluded thereunto, official transcripts will quote, an abbreviation signal of ET, European Transfer, for the courses studied abroad.

1 Students gain an advanced and contemporary knowledge and practical skill after general or bachelor's degree qualification. To obtain an ability to support his/her knowledge and practical skill with technical sources and equipments and to use basic and principle technical terminology of furniture and decoration education.
2 Student can gather and use data to solve well defined problems on furniture and decoration education subjects. He/She can efficiently use his or her practical and knowledge skills in practical applications.
3 Students know manufacturing processes in furniture and decoration education sectors and can offer improvements when needed. He/she has knowledge of quality control processes and has practical skill to use quality control in furniture manufacturing processes.
4 To gain theoretical and practical skills in joining of furniture materials, implementing quality control in furniture structures.
5 To obtain an adequate theoretical knowledge and practical skills on composite materials, general structure of wood material, furniture strength, adhering technology, ergonomics of furniture, method of design, design of advanced furniture and improving prototype, the testing techniques of furniture production and facility planning and to use these techniques.
6 Gaining ability to self learning and also implementing his/her learning. To gain skill to conduct research on his/her subject personally and present results as technical reports. Monitoring new improvements and updating him/herself continuously and also updating and upgrading these improvements to his/her institution.
7 Having use of foreign languages can make communication and follow up new technologies in furniture and decoration education
8 Having advenced computing skill to use wordprocessing, internet communication, CAD programs such as solidwood, 3dmax. etc.
9 Having an adequate knowledge of health and safety in furniture work sectors and also knowledge of social security, ethic values, quality assurance systems, management and environment.
10 Having ability to self evaluate him/her self to make progress and improvements. Being open minded to ideas and improvements he/she supports him/her self and institutions. He/she has knowledge of law, regulation and policy related to his/her job and obeys all the rules accordingly. He/she has a respect and awareness of the environment and the society.

[] Program Structure
Furniture and Decoration Education Program, 21 and 120 ECTS credits are arranged to be local. This program not less than 21 credits, at least seven courses, seminars and thesis work consists of. Graduate Seminar, Specialization Courses and Master thesis included in the overall grade point average, is evaluated as successful or unsuccessful.

[] Graduation Requirements

In order to gain the degree, the student is required to have minimum 54 ECTS credits lectures (from the graduate course programme) and successfully completed them. Then, the student should prepare a thesis after caring out a research on a topic supervised by a senior lecturer. On a successful submission of thesis, student is required to give a successful oral examination on his/her work.
